Bokani Dyer keeps pulling threads from his catalogue, and his new single “Thembisa” finds him working with vocalist Phoebe Mgxaji.
The song pairs Mgxaji’s warm delivery with Dyer’s modern African jazz sensibilities. It arrives as a standalone single, available through Africori, and it lands ahead of his forthcoming Bokani Dyer Trio project, Traditions.
Dyer has spent years building a reputation as one of South African jazz’s most compelling voices. His 2023 album Radio Sechaba, released through Brownswood, explored nation-building and South Africa’s multifaceted people. That record followed years of work as a pianist, composer and producer, including the group Ke Nako.
Mgxaji’s presence gives the track its emotional weight. She does not rush a single line. Instead, she lets the melody breathe, and that patience suits Dyer’s restrained arrangement.
The production keeps things sparse, so the vocals stay front and centre. Nothing gets buried under heavy instrumentation. It is a smart choice because both artists thrive in open space.
