DJ Mohzaic, the Nigerian musician and recording artist, has released a new project titled “Press Play II”. The “II” carries its own weight, because a DJ does not build a sequel lightly.

The tape works as both a command and a promise. It starts strong and holds that energy from the first track down to the last. Afrobeats, amapiano and street-pop are the likely ingredients, although no tracklist has surfaced yet.

What matters here is the DJ’s control. A good set builds in waves, so the tempo should climb and settle on purpose rather than drift. Besides, that is the difference between a playlist and a proper mix.

Mohzaic has been busy. He also put out “Kele Chukwu” as part of the Highlife Piano EP on his own imprint. Before that came a throwback mix built from old Naija songs stretching back to 2000.

Press Play II is built for the car, the club and the house. Long sessions, loud speakers. It also lands in the middle of a steady run of mixes from him, so the timing says plenty about the pace he keeps.
