South African producer Mr JazziQ steps into Bujwa on his new single “Katalia,” a style he has not touched before. Co-produced with Thesiix, the record also brings Shazz RSA, Don Deeya and Magwe ZA into the fold.
Bujwa is a high-tempo electronic dance subgenre that grew out of South African townships. So this is a scene record, not a quick crossover attempt. The arrangement runs six minutes and thirty-eight seconds, built fast for the dance floor.
The session started after a World Cup soccer game, which explains the loose, crowded energy in the room. Don Deeya laid down a hook first, then Magwe ZA joined. Shazz RSA came in later to add a softer vocal contrast against the track’s livelier sound.
Black Is Brown Entertainment released it, with ONErpm handling distribution. “Katalia” also sits on Mr JazziQ’s album Coolest in the City.
Producers rarely move into a township genre this directly while the sound is still forming. It puts him alongside the vocalists shaping Bujwa rather than watching from outside.
