Yemi Alade links up with Jeriq on a fresh new record called “Overtake.”
The track arrives as the fourteenth song on her album “It’s Yemi Alade,” a project put out through Effyzzie Music Group. It clocks in at just under three minutes, so nothing gets stretched thin here. The two artists split duties cleanly: she carries the melody while he handles the rap.
Alade has been at this since signing with Effyzzie in 2012, and the run since then includes “Black Magic,” “Woman Of Steel,” “Empress,” and “Rebel Queen.” Her father was a police commissioner, and she grew up between Yoruba and Igbo roots before music took over.
Jeriq brings a harder edge, and that contrast is the point. Afropop and hip-hop share plenty of space in Nigerian music right now, but not every pairing lands. This one does, because neither side plays it safe. The beat stays lean, so the voices have room to move.
