Zanefa Ngidi and Phindile Buthelezi join forces on a vibrant new collaboration called “Awuthi Veku.” The track arrives as the second song on his five-track EP, Oshiphigwebu. It carries the unmistakable energy of traditional Zulu folk music.
The record runs for four minutes and seven seconds. Intricate acoustic guitar patterns and rolling concertina rhythms drive the arrangement forward. Ngidi brings his raw izibongo style, delivering rapid-fire praise chanting with plenty of personality. Buthelezi counters with smoother, soaring vocals that add melodic depth.
Their contrasting approaches create a compelling dynamic. Ngidi commands the song with forceful delivery. Buthelezi softens the edges with her warmer texture. The two balance each other throughout.
Interestingly, this marks Buthelezi’s first appearance on the project. She returns later on the closing track, “Happy Birthday,” cementing her place in the EP’s vocal lineup. That consistency gives the project a cohesive feel across its runtime.
“Awuthi Veku” captures Maskandi tradition through expressive vocals and acoustic instrumentation. The chemistry between these two performers makes it worth a listen. Have you heard Zanefa Ngidi – Awuthi Veku yet? Tell us your verdict in the comments.
