Nigerian indigenous rapper Zoro Swagbag and award-winning singer Teni link up on “Joy Giver,” a brand new record. The pairing brings two very different voices onto one track.
Zoro leans heavily on the Igbo language in his hip-hop, and that choice has made him a recognisable name for listeners who like their rap rooted in Nigerian culture. Teni arrives from the other direction, carrying the melody with a delivery that has earned her awards. He brings bars and energy while she brings the voice.
The song sits where indigenous rap meets contemporary Afrobeats, a space Zoro has been working in for a while. There is no word yet on a project behind it, so “Joy Giver” stands on its own as a single.
Indigenous rap has spent years pushing into the mainstream, and link-ups like this one keep widening the lane for it.
