Humblesmith opens his brand new EP with “Aso Oke,” a record that leans hard into heritage and melody. The song arrives as track one on Mr Melody, a six-track project the singer built around his highlife roots. It is also his first body of work in a while, so anticipation had been building quietly online before the drop.
Producers handled the boards across the EP, with credits spread among several beatmakers. “Aso Oke” itself sits at the top of that tracklist, setting the tone for what follows. On it, Humblesmith stays close to African culture and personal experience instead of chasing whatever sound is trending.
Born Ekenedirichukwu Ijemba, he has moved between Afropop, R&B and highlife for years. His 2016 single “Osinachi” remains the record most fans still tie to his name, and its remix widened his reach further. That highlife-leaning identity has stayed with him since.
The mood here is warm and unhurried. He lets the melody carry the weight rather than piling on production tricks, which suits the reflective tone he seems to be going for. It feels like a record for slow evenings and long drives.
